Small Gardens – Tips and Ideas

Suggest length, width and length in your garden
By suggesting depth, width and length you make your garden look bigger. A dark back side in your garden will give depth, while a lighter background will give a garden more width. A fence with horizontal shelves will make the garden look longer.
You can use the space in a small garden in an optimal way by using creepers, the so-called ‘vertical gardening’.
Also in a small garden you can put some big foliage plants. Your garden will look quitter and wider. Soft colors provide also quitness and balance.
Deciduous shrubs, with their constantly changing appearance, makes your garden fascinating in every season.
Consider also some garden plants and shrubs that stay green throughout the year, otherwise you’re in the winter with a bare garden.
There are plenty of plants with (multi)colored leaves that will give striking accents in a more green vegetation, or give color to a shady area.
When choosing garden plants take care that bloom is spread over the entire season. Most plants flower between mid May and mid August.
For color in the spring, there are always places to find where bulbs can revert. There are also a number of shrubs and ground cover plants that bloom early in spring.
The choice of garden plants
In order to give a garden a quite atmosphere you better limit your choice to 2 or 3 different colors in different shades, flowering plants. This is more beautiful than a motley collection of plants in all kinds of colors.
I have chosen plants which are flowering in different kinds of colors pink, purple/blue and white. Different shades in the colors yellow, light purple/blue and white is also a beautiful and sunnt combination, especially in shady gardens. Don’t use too many white flowering plants in a sunny garden, and put these on the shady spots.
Do you like bright colors? Then a combination of red, yellow and light purple/blue flowering plants might be a good idea.
Variation in color? Plant spring bulbs that bloom in different colors than the plants that flower in the summer, as a result your garden will have a different color combination in spring.
