Over Deliver When Caring For Your Roses & They’ll Reward You Forever

Article by Peter Bourke

Caring for roses is one of the most popular gardening pastimes, the flowers are among the most loved anywhere in the world. Typically however, a rose garden is known for being difficult to take care of however, anyone serious about caring for roses won’t sit back & wonder why they’re not having success.

Generally speaking most find the rewards of a beautiful rose garden far exceed the effort required to maintain it and once you learn how to do it, you realize that it’s no more difficult than maintaining any type of garden.

Probably THE MOST important point to remember when caring for roses is watering.

As long as you continue to water your roses well, they will continue to bloom and look beautiful in return.

Roses need approximately one inch of water every week, and they need it in such a way that the water reaches the roots that extend well below the surface.

That is, watered lightly for an extended period of time.

This is the reason roses are able to survive dry spells, their roots go so deep they are able to take water from the subsoil even though the surface is parched.

When the roots of the rose remain well watered they are encouraged to grow deeper into the soil.

If the gardener doesn’t water their roses well, the roots may not grow to their full potential and remain primarily near the surface.

When this occurs, it inhibits the rose from being able to extract water from the subsoil, and therefore unable to withstand a dry spell.

Caring for roses includes fertilizing.

If your rose garden consists of very good soil the plants can survive for years without much fertilization, but if they are not planted in the right soil, they will need to be fertilized more often.

Plants feed on the waste of the organisms that live in the soil.

If you use too much man made fertilizer it can kill the organisms that provide nutrients for the plants and make the plant reliant on your fertilizer.

The preferable fertilizer is a slow release type that you can spread around your garden in the spring just as your roses are coming out of hibernation.

Another good time to put down some fertilizer in your rose garden is when the plant is preparing for its next season of hibernation, but be sure to put down the same fertilizer that you’re going to put down prior to midsummer.Whether you use organic or inorganic fertilizer matters not to the rose, although the organic is absorbed by the bacteria that live in the soil, and causes your soil to become more fertile.

The two most successful organic fertilizer combinations for caring for roses are 5-10-5 or 4-8-4.

When the plant is coming out of its dormancy in the spring, it is very important to prune back its branches in order to encourage new growth.Pruning also removes all of the leaves, branches, and wood that has died or become diseased over the course of the winter.

Another benefit of pruning is to encourage an appealing shape in your rose bush, but this is best done after your bush has started blooming. If you prune the flowers you will encourage more growth and more blooms.

You must have patience, skill, and knowledge of roses, and your rose garden, to be successful at caring for roses.Once mastered, you will enjoy the beauty of your roses forever.

There is little else in this old world of ours that looks as beautiful as rose bushes full-blooming on your front lawn.
